Ground elevation is not your floor

The elevation answer estimates the ground at the selected point. It will not tell you how high you are inside a building or above a bridge. Your phone’s altitude can refer to a different starting level, so it may disagree with ground elevation.

A hill needs a precise point

On a steep slope, a wide location accuracy circle can cover noticeably different elevations. Check the point first, then request elevation. Small heights keep their sign and a decimal so a point just above or below sea level does not look like zero. Extra digits do not make it a surveyed height. Copy the coordinates to check the same point elsewhere.

When an elevation is unavailable

The service may be offline or have no coverage at that point. An unavailable answer is not sea level. Your other location details still work. See how terrain elevation is estimated before using it for work that needs a surveyed height.
