Use the whole county name
A county name can occur in more than one state. Keep the state with it when filling out a form. The FIPS code identifies the county or equivalent; it is not a ZIP Code. For a different point, use the place and coordinate lookup.
Parish, borough or independent city?
Louisiana uses parishes. Alaska includes boroughs and census areas. Some cities are county equivalents in their own right, and Connecticut uses planning regions in Census county-level geography. The result keeps the published unit name instead of adding “County” to everything.
Near a county line
If the accuracy circle crosses the boundary, your device fix may not settle which side you are on. Request a fresh position and check the map. For tax, voting or jury paperwork, confirm with the office that sent the form. City boundaries and ZIP areas cannot settle the county for you.
