County equivalents outside the US
For a UK point, this tool uses ONS county and unitary-authority boundaries from December 2025. The result may be a county, unitary authority or another local-authority equivalent. It does not identify historic or ceremonial counties. In Ireland the answer is one of the 31 local authorities in Tailte Éireann’s 2026 statutory boundaries: a county council, Dublin’s four councils and the city councils of Cork and Galway with their county beside them, or the merged councils of Limerick and Waterford.
In Canada the answer is the census division from Statistics Canada’s 2021 boundaries: a county, regional municipality, regional district, MRC in Quebec, or a division Statistics Canada draws where a province has no county level. In Australia it is the local government area (the council area) in the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2026 approximation of the gazetted boundaries, and in New Zealand the territorial authority (the district or city council) as Stats NZ mapped it on 1 January 2026, with its region.
In Mexico the answer is the municipio, or in Mexico City the alcaldía (borough), from INEGI’s geostatistical framework of December 2025, which INEGI draws for its statistics. In Switzerland it is the district (Bezirk, district or distretto) in swisstopo’s boundaries as at 1 January 2026; nine cantons, among them Geneva, Zug and Basel-Stadt, have no districts, and there the answer is the canton. Near a boundary, check the address with the council or municipality itself. Other countries are not covered by this county lookup.
Use the whole county name
A county name can occur in more than one state. Keep the state with it when filling out a form. The FIPS code identifies the county or equivalent; it is not a ZIP Code. For a different point, enter its coordinates or search a US city in the tool above.
Parish, borough or independent city?
Louisiana uses parishes. Alaska includes boroughs and census areas. Some cities are county equivalents in their own right, and Connecticut uses planning regions in Census county-level geography. The result keeps the published unit name instead of adding “County” to everything. Compare the county counts and unit names by state.
Near a county line
If the accuracy circle crosses the boundary, your position may not settle which side you are on. Request a fresh position and check the map. For tax, voting or jury paperwork, confirm with the office that sent the form. City boundaries and ZIP areas cannot settle the county for you.
